The vacuum cleaner is a device that uses an air pump to suck up dust and dirt. the oldest models used centrifugal fans to create partial suction. The modern vacuum cleaners we use nowadays, evolved from carpet sweepers, or manual vacuum cleaners. The very first manual vacuum cleaner was invented by Daniel Hess in 1860. his invention gathered dust using a bellows.
The first motorized vacuum cleaner was invented by Hubert Cecil Booth in 1901. He was inspired to create it after he saw a demonstration of a machine that blew air out of a tube to blast away dust. He thought that if the process could be reversed, it would be a much more hygienic way to get rid of dust. His invention, nicknamed the "puffing billy" was a horse-powered, machine. It used a piston pump to draw air through a cloth fiber. It was too big and bulky to fit inside any building, but the long nozzles were used to suck up dirt. Booth originally didn't sell his invention, but sold cleaning services instead, with one service priced at 4$. Its principles of operation were essentially the same as vacuum cleaners today. Hubert Cecil booth Hubert Cecil Booth was a British engineer who invented the first vacuum cleaner and first vacuum cleaner service. He was born in Paris and his family moved to Gloucester when he was 2 months old. He attended school at Gloucester College and Gloucester County School. He also designed Ferris wheels and suspension bridges. Booth also worked on the design of engines for royal navy battleships. Booth tested out his idea of a cloth filter for a vacuum by placing a handkerchief over his mouth and trying to suck up dirt while he was on a train. |
